3 Adrenaline-Pumping Events In GL This September
A little geography lesson first. Our subject paradise is one of the nine municipalities in Siargao, Surigao del Norte, Philippines. It has approximately 15,000 people and is the main tourist destination of Siargao due to its internationally acclaimed surfing waves called Cloud 9. Ladies and gents, I am talking about General Luna or as the locals proudly say, GL.
Unlike Boracay where the peak of its visitors comes around summertime, General Luna comes to life during the monsoon season. As exhilarating as its waves offer, GL’s three major events will make you high in all the good ways.
1. The Siargao National Surfing Cup- This usually takes place days prior to the international leg. Expect to see completely tanned surfers from Baler, Quezon, La Union, Zambales and other parts of the Philippines to join the competition and camaraderie. Witness why Filipinos are perfectly born for the waves as surfers ride on strong rip curls while effortlessly swerving their boards to maintain their balance and cool.
2. 22nd International Surfing Cup- Since the good ol’ chill vibe doesn’t shake off easily, it is only fitting that the international surfing cup happens days after the national contest. For this year, the international leg will be between September 24 and 29. Europeans, Americans and Asians will be giving their best as they will compete for a huge pot money. Feast your eyes on the multitude of cool surfboards, half-naked men, ladies in bikinis and rash guards enjoying 10+ft waves. Laid-back and and lively music from Jack Johnson, Mishka, the ever-present Bob Marley, and perhaps Alesso will make the entire event more colorful and livelier.
3. Feast of Sto. Tomas Villanueva- The fiesta is sandwiched by the two surfing events as this will happen on September 22. Sto. Tomas Villanueva will surely be delighted to see this small community celebrate the good life for 2 weeks by parades, dancing and singing along live bands and karaokes, holding bikini open competition, playing filipino games, and having an overflow supply of lechon, grilled seafoods, pancit, rice, buko salad, banana pancakes, chicken-mango curry, sweet breads, junk foods, soft drinks and beer. (Whew!)
Should you be missing out on these events? Heck no! Go ahead and book your flight and accommodation now. See you at GL next month!
